Product Description

Header Lateral Screen

The header lateral system is designed for effective media retention across a broad range of applications. These assemblies, connected to a central header pipe or hub, consist of a series of screen laterals that allow uniform collection and/or distribution through the process media.

They can easily accommodate various vessel sizes and shapes with side, center, top, or bottom inlet pipes, and can be designed to handle flow in any direction.

Header Lateral Screens

Versatility is the best one-word description of the Header and Hub Lateral system.

These assemblies, made of a series of screen laterals attached to a central header or hub, allow designers to ensure uniform flow through process media over a wide velocity range and for a variety of vessel sizes and shapes.

A typical vessel uses a header lateral assembly at the top to evenly distribute the inflow across the bed surface. A second assembly near the bottom of the vessel collects the processed flow and either discharges it through the vessel wall or, by connecting the laterals to a central hub, exits it from the vessel bottom. A similar distribution and collection system can be designed for countercurrent flow.

Several design options are available to achieve uniform, controlled velocity flow and collection. For instance, the number and spacing of laterals can be varied. Slot size can range from 0.05 mm and be increased in increments of 0.03 mm. Diameters of laterals and headers can also vary. To withstand specific process chemistry or conditions, screen assemblies can be made from almost any weldable metal, including various grades of stainless steel and exotic alloys.

Assemblies are typically manufactured from Type 304 stainless steel, though other weldable metals can also be used.

Laterals can be manufactured in any diameter starting from 12.7 mm.

Lateral components can be attached to headers or hubs by any desired method including threaded fittings, couplings, or flanges.

Lateral spacing, length, diameter, and slot opening size are determined based on individual system requirements.

To increase collapse resistance and improve flow distribution, perforated pipe liners can be used on the screen edges.

Slots can be as small as 0.05 mm and increase in 0.03 mm increments.

Quality documentation, charts, mill certifications, welding procedure specifications, and various other reports and certifications are available.

Pre- and post-manufacturing processes such as passivation, acid cleaning, stress relief, polishing, and coating are available.

Custom solutions are also available.

In-Vessel Applications

Johnson’s Vee Wire internals for ion exchange processes put an end to media loss and degradation issues.

Improves Efficiency

  • High resistance to load and pressure

  • Longer lifespan compared to non-metallic internal vessel components

Effective Backwash

  • Higher open area reduces pressure drop

  • Reduces maintenance and shutdown costs

This technology can be easily adapted for a wide range of water treatment processes such as softening, ion exchange, demineralization, and more. They are used to collect and distribute treatment fluids, retain media, distribute backwash flow, or filter solids.

Header Laterals

Header laterals can be used both as distributors and collectors. The system is custom-designed to suit the flow, pressure drop, media size, and vessel ID. The main pipe, header, all fittings, and screens are available in SS 304, 316L grades as per customer requirements.
